Remembrance Week 2009

Remembrance at Alec – We Will Remember Them.

Remembrance Week is a very important time for the College. Following on from a memorial trip to the battlefields, in Belgium, in October, students showed their respects today by observing a 2 minute silence at 11 o’clock.

During lunchtimes, our inter active Remembrance Zone has hosted veterans and serving soldiers, giving students a chance to learn from their experiences, whilst students have been able to post a message on our giant Poppy of Remembrance. Students were also able to research their ancestors, on the British and Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, to identify any family loss. As always, our students demonstrated great thoughtfulness and sensitivity in these matters.

It is now 4 years since our Remembrance visit to New Zealand and Singapore, when 24 Alec Hunter students went out, as Remembrance Ambassadors, to learn about the Commonwealth’s experiences of war and share their knowledge in our community. Since then, our tradition of Remembrance has not diminished. Particularly at this difficult time, with world events as they are, We Will Remember Them.
