Neighbourhood Watch

What is the Neighbourhood Watch?

Neighbourhood Watch is all about the community working together to ensure that we live in a safe society.

It is a great way of  working with the Police as Neighbourhood Watch is an important factor of Neighbourhood Policing. It achieves better communication between the community and the Police.

Neighbourhood Watch reminds everyone to be more vigilant to reduce the opportunity of crime!

It is very difficult to give advice to strangers-so join your local Neighbourhood Watch Group-it costs nothing and it will give you peace of mind that there are people around you who care!

“The Opportunity of Crime Reduces in a Community which Cares”.

If you do not know your Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator, or would like to have information on Neighbourhood Watch please contact:

Clive Stewart , Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator,

Braintree District Council Area,

Essex Police, Braintree Police Station,

Blyths Meadow, Braintree , Essex , CM7 3DJ .

What has Neighbourhood Watch done for me?

Do you remember the comedy sketch in a Monty Python Film, “What have the Romans done for us?”

One of many answers was  “Building roads and developing irrigation”.

Neighbourhood Watch has, in a sense built roads, direct “roads of communication” – just like the Roman’s roads they go straight to the destinations-the community!

This has helped to reduce the opportunity of crime and make our society safer.

Neighbourhood Watch is coming up to its 25th year in the UK .

A fifth of the population in the UK are involved in Neighbourhood Watch- over eleven million!

They all help each other to be more effective in looking after their personal property, and helping the vulnerable – so everyone is looking after their neighbours/friends whatever their ages!

Also NHW makes a difference in reducing the opportunity of crime.

Neighbourhood Watch works and is an important factor of Neighbourhood policing - as it improves communication between the public and the Police.

So what has Neighbourhood Watch done for you?

1. It creates and improves community spirit!

The community gets together as groups are organised and managed by the community-not the Police.

2. Neighbourhood Watch groups advise all residents to be more security conscience.

By distributing literature which gives advice, from the Police, e.g.: “What to do!” When you have unwanted callers; when on holiday & leaving your homes unoccupied; also keeping your wallet/purse safe when out and about and many other actions, too!

3. The Police support Neighbourhood Watch groups.

The Police state they cannot manage alone the constant fight against crime, and, more than ever need the support of local people to act as “eyes and ears” in the community and report suspicious incidents.

The local communities are in a much better position, to determine what is usual and unusual in their areas.

4. The Police have supplied information re: local criminal activity & received responses from the community which has helped to solve crime.

The Police communicate to the community by e-mails/telephone, with actions which require co-ordinators to ask the community for information on specific “activities” to reduce crime...

Please note that “The Opportunity of Crime Reduces in a Community which Cares”.
