DfES Designated Specialist College

In September 2005 Alec Hunter was awarded designation as a DfES Specialist Humanities College.

 Why Humanities?

Becoming a Specialist Humanities College enables us to focus on a range of activities that truly prepare our students for the wider world. Our lead subject is English and Literacy which is critical to developing our students into well-rounded citizens who can communicate and make positive relationships in preparation for higher education and employment. We know, as a result of our strong links with employers and higher education how vital it is that we provide the opportunity for our students to excel in our specialist subjects of English, History and Citizenship.

What  Specialist College Status has meant for Alec Hunter

Since achieving Specialist College Status in September 2005 many initiatives have impacted on the experiences of the students and wider community. The Media Centre is now complete and will provide opportunities for students to learn Media techniques and become expert in Media Technology. The Humanities Learning Resource Centre will allow students to fully exploit the use of ICT in their Humanities studies and become more independent learners. Speaking and Listening initiatives such as Sports Leaders and Mock Trials are encouraging active participation and better communication skills. These initiatives are helping to drive school improvement and provide opportunities for all.
