Special Educational Needs

Students with Special Education Needs follow the same curriculum as all other students in the College but may receive some additional support: any learning support provided is matched to the needs of the individual student.

Apart from the support provided by Learning Support Assistants in the class room, the Department currently offers specific programmes aimed to develop literacy, language, handwriting, spelling and social inclusion skills and provides a lunchtime Homework Club.

All students identified as having a Special Educational Need, either at their Primary School or at Alec Hunter, will have an Individual Education Plan (IEP).

Parents and students are invited to all Individual Education Plan meetings where their views and wishes are central to the planning process. The Individual Education Plan is reviewed and updated on a regular basis and parents always receive a copy of the agreed plan.

Parents are encouraged to work as partners with the college in identifying areas for development and supporting their child’s progress through such strategies as reading at home with them or helping with spelling and handwriting programmes.
