Reading Connects

We are proud to be a Reading Connects college. We are working hard to create a school reading ethos: the intention is that our pupils work within an environment which encourages all forms of reading, from magazines to classic literature. Out motto is Reading Means Achieving.

We begin in the Visitors Reception foyer. Here we have a library of books for visitor's to read. In addition, we have a folder of suggestions for 'good reads.'

In the main foyer we have our certificate displayed within the Reading Connects notice board and photographs of pupils across the school engaged in reading. In D corridor we have our Real Men Read display, featuring male members of staff and Premier League football stars: all of our real men are photographed reading a favourite book; so ladies, if you need a good man visit out display board!

We have established a Boys' Reading Club every Wednesday in the school library and next half term we are planning to invite into school a published author to speak to Club members.

We have many ideas to encourage reading and always welcome support and input from the community.

Wondering how to keep sane over the holidays? Why not combine fun with reading?

Try these web-sites to engage your family in reading

There are sites for younger children as well as Alec pupils

Year 7 & 8 pupils will appreciate the Morris Gleitzman and Louis Sacher sites

The aim of Reading Connects is to encourage family reading as well as reading in school. Many of these sites have activities to encourage this – from writing a story to on-line reading, plus lots of games to engage your child during moments when you need a break!
