Newsday
Newsday provides a rich cross - curriculum activity, while challenging students to produce a newspaper for a given deadline. The main aim is for pupils to produce a newspaper that reflected the news of the day using live news. Each year a group of Able, gifted and talented pupils gain the maximum benefit from the activity because its owned by the pupils. Stories and pictures are downloaded from many news sources on the Internet. Pupils make their own editorial decisions regarding the topics they wished to cover and how to present them to suit the style of their publication. Reviews, feature articles, editorial, fashion news, sport and puzzles are all written up and included in the final newspaper.
All pupils involved have the opportunity to develop new and existing skills. For example:
To give students an opportunity to write for a real audience.
To create an opportunity for pupils to work collaboratively to real deadlines.
To develop a newsgathering tradition across the curriculum.
To increase awareness of professional writing skills.
To encourage a critical understanding of the media.
To offer an appropriate environment for developing IT skills.
To build an effective industry education link.
To take part in a FUN activity.
To participate in a truly memorable occasion.
Preparation and planning for the day is covered by Ms Whitaker, Teacher of English and Media Studies, and Sarah Witcher, IT Technician. On the day Ms Whitaker supervises time management, which is paramount. While Sarah Witcher covers technical issues to support the pupils, which is also vital in making the day a success.
