ALEC ACHIEVES NATIONAL HEALTHY SCHOOL STATUS

On the 1st October 2009 members of the College attended a ceremony in Chelmsford to be presented with a plaque to show we had achieved National Healthy School Status. This is now proudly displayed in the foyer and is a recognition of the College achieving the standard set by the Government to be a Healthy School

The National Healthy Schools Programme is an exciting long-term initiative which is making a significant difference to the health and achievement of children and young people. The National Healthy Schools Programme supports the links between health, behaviour and achievement; it is about creating healthy and happy children and young people, who do better in learning and in life.

The impact of the programme is based on a whole-school approach to physical and emotional well-being focused on four core themes:

•    Personal, Social & Health Education

•    Healthy Eating

•    Physical Activity

•    Emotional Health & Wellbeing

The whole school approach involves working with children and young people, parents, school staff and the whole school community to provide a solid foundation from which developments and improvement are embedded in a systematic way. These processes contribute to the physical and emotional development of all members of the school community.

Healthy School Weeks

One week per term is designated a Healthy Schools Week. This allows us to focus on key areas and bring in outside agencies to discus health related matters. This year we have included PD (Personal Development) to our school curriculum. This allows us more time to deliver important elements of PSHE.

2008 – 2009 dates are as follows:-

Term1. 20th -24th October focusing on friendship and bullying issues

Term 2. 30th March -3rd. April focusing on sex and drugs education

Term 3. July  (date yet to be agreed) focusing on exercise and Healthy Eating
